Our Practices
-
All our animals are processe at Pease Packing. Pease Packing is a USDA-compliant processing facility in southwest Michigan.
-
Regenerative farming is an approach to agriculture that prioritizes sustainability and stewardship. The practices we utilize at Drumhiller Farm focus on soil health. For example, we move our cattle daily to mimic the the movement of natural herd animals like the buffalo. By doing this, the cattle get the best part of the forage without overgrazing and they are depositing manure. Once moved, the cattle do not return to that particular pasture for at least a few months. This allows the pasture time to rest and grow as the manure breaks down providing a natural source of nutrients. As the pasture rests and grows,
-
While we do not have an organic certification, all our animals forage on pastures that never receive pesticides or artificial fertilizer. Additionally, our animals do not receive any antibiotics, growth hormones or steroids. Our cattle and lambs feed solely on pasture. Our chickens, turkey an hogs are raised on pasture but do receive an GMO-free grain supplement to meet all their dietary needs.
-
As ruminants, the dietary needs of cattle and lambs can be met solely by grazing on pasture. Chickens, turkeys and hogs are not ruminants and require a supplemental food source to meet all their dietary needs. In addition to the grass, weeds, legumes, nuts, seeds, insects and worms they find and eat on pasture they receive a non-GMO grain supplement to fill in any gaps. Chickens, turkeys and hogs are omnivorous and were not created to eat grass alone.
-
“Pastured/pasture-raised” means that the animals raised on pasture not confined to a barn or feed lot. They have daily access to pasture and are moved frequently. We say “pastured” instead of “grass-fed” because chickens, turkeys and hogs require more than just grass and forage to meet their dietary needs.
-
“Grass-fed and finished” means that an animal has been raised solely on grass/forage for the entire duration of their lives. This is an important distinction because many times a meat can be labeled “grass-fed” even when the animal has been “finished off” with grain and fillers. A lot of “grass-fed” beef is quickly finished with grain because it the cattle put on weight quickly. But this is at the expense of the well-being of the cattle and the nutrient-profile of the end product. Our beef is 100% grass-fed and finished, meaning our cattle and lambs have only had a diet of grass and orange for the entirety of their lives. We don’t take any shortcuts.
