Pastured Pork

While it’s true that hogs will eat almost anything, what they eat and how they’re raised has a direct effect on the quality of the pork. That’s why our hogs are raised on wooded pasture with plenty of room to move. Humanely raising hogs this way results in pork that is both intensely flavorful and packed full of the vitamins and minerals they consumed while on pasture.

Better for Them

On our farm, the hogs have it all: wooded pasture, fresh air, sunshine and the tree nuts they love. By moving them regularly, they have access to a steady supply of grass, forbs, tree nuts and more. Being omnivores, their pasture diet is supplemented with a GMO-free grain ration to help meet their dietary needs. Living in a stress-free environment on pasture with plenty of room to move, play and forage is critical for these intelligent playful creatures.

Better for You

Compared to conventionally-raised pork, pasture-raised pork has higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids giving it a significantly better omega:6 to 3 ratio. Additionally, it is lower in saturated fats and has higher levels of vitamins D and E. Because they are able to move and play, the meat contains higher levels of protein. Being raised naturally in a stress-free environment leads to healthy happy hogs that do not need antibiotics, hormones or other drugs. The old saying, “you are what you eat” hold true when it comes to pork.

Better for Nature

Truth-be-told, hogs can be destructive to pasture. But—as they root and forage—they till, aerate and fertilize the soil which increases the fertility of the soil. Moving them regularly ensures their manure is spread evenly and breaks down naturally rather than running off and contaminating the local watershed. Pastured hogs are healthy hogs and healthy hogs do not need antibiotics, hormones or steroids.  Raising pork this way means these synthetic inputs won’t find their way into your food or the environment nor contribute to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Taste the Drumhiller Difference

In addition to whole, half and quarter sides of pork—we offer hams, ham steaks and brats. All of it has been raised regeneratively on pasture and is free of antibiotics, steroids and hormones.
